We used Checkstyle to help capture any formatting errors.Ĭheckstyle is a development tool to help programmers write Java code that adheres to a coding standard. Since our codebase is a mixture of Java and Kotlin code, we needed guides and tools for both. The only consideration we had was it should require minimal setup effort and should be easy for a new developer to adopt.

Having a properly formatted code ensures pull requests don’t have noise in the form of whitespaces, function ordering, braces, etc and rather focuses on the enhancements. The bulk of the effort involved setting up a code styling guide, formatting all our code based on the style guide and setting up automated checks to capture formatting errors.

Such AST-based transformations are not provided by this plugin.Recently I looked into reducing the noise from our pull requests. Eclipse users may miss the application of save-actions like 'adding annotations' or 'member sort order'. Please note that this plugin only provides support for formatting. Further details on this bug can be watched here There seems to be a bug in the Google Java Code Formatter which prevents this feature to work.

Guarded blocks are not supported for the Google Java Code Formatter.

Updating the breakpoints after formatting acts not exactly the same way as for the internal NetBeans formatter, but it's pretty close.
